Seven Things To Stop Doing In Training

Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.

Maya Angelou

We’ve all been stuck in that spot as trainers. We do the best we can until we know better. It can be a harrowing experience to discover you’ve been doing things “wrong” right in the middle of doing them wrong.

I’m here to help, even though you may not have asked!

I am often asked in class what are the worst or best or strangest or most annoying things trainers can do in class. To answer the worst question (and maybe most annoying) I’ve created my SEVEN THINGS TO STOP DOING LIST.

Ready?

Seven Things To Stop Doing In Training

  1. Doing things learners can do for themselves
  2. Telling learners what they should get out of an exercise
  3. Asking people to read out loud
  4. Cramming SO MUCH on a PowerPoint slide
  5. Confusing presenting information with training people
  6. Going around the room for each person to introduce themselves
  7. Counting people to form groups

I could keep going, but since you didn’t ask for any of these, I will keep the list short.

Which are you guilty of?

What would you add to the list?

We’ve all done them, so give yourself a break. And because you know better, now you can do better.

I love how many of you have asked me about each of these. Not just what makes them annoying, but what are alternatives. Click on the thing you want to stop doing to see my explanation and alternatives!

Now start doing the things that work for you and your learner!
